Engine Model Description

One of the data fields requested when setting up a vehicle is Engine Model. That information can then be used as a filter when reviewing logged results for a vehicle.

My problem is relating the engine model choices to the actual engines for that car model.

As an example, the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is available with a 2.5 liter in-line 4cylinder non turbo engine, or a 2.0 liter turbo engine. The Fuelly choices for engine type are Gas H4, Gas L4 and Other.

How do you determine what to choose?

This also the case for other vehicles. The 2013 Cadillac ATS is available with a 2.0 liter turbo 4 cyl, 2.5 non turbo 4 cyl and a V6. Choices are Gas H4, GasL4 and Gas V6. It is not obvious to me which is the correct choice.

To make it more confusing that year of the car was actually offered with 6 different engines (not all in the USA).

I see your point and this is something we have put a lot of thought into for the next release of Fuelly. In this case, on the current system (which will be phased out in about a week) you would select Gas L4 for the engine. On the new system we will get the engine & transmission information from the same place parts suppliers do. Once we are on the new system you will be able to choose exactly which engine and which transmission are in your car. This will make our data much better in the long run because we will be able to compare apples to apples.

Look for more info soon on the new Fuelly platform to be released in the next couple weeks. It's a total backend rebuild but the front end will look nearly identical.

Andy, thanks for the follow-up. The change should make the data more meaningful.
