In my opinion, one of the best four-cylinder engines was the i-DSi engine in my sadly departed Honda Jazz. It was only 1246cc in the version I had, but it was a twin spark and had fabulous low-down torque.

No other 4 cylinder has impressed me as much as the 1.6 THP in my GTi. With 243 lbs/ft at just 1900 rpm, it puts most diesels to shame, embarrasses my Porsche a little, and is better than most EVs I've ever looked into aswell. People rave about the Toyota GR Yaris, Peugeot were doing the same thing with small engines years before but somehow went under the radar. Overlooked and under rated come to mind. They still use this engine in most of their lineup in various forms, usually combined with hybrid power now due to it's superb engineering, refinement and fuel efficiency.

I worked at a Honda dealer in '03-'04 and got to drive an S2000 one time. It was definitely a cool car. I'd have to put that engine on the short list, if not top of the list.

Yep great engines, just a shame about the very poor fuel consumption and high emissions. Buy the wrong year in the UK and you're penalised with almost $750 in road tax every year.
