Personally, I would go for a younger car with high mileage. Three of my last four cars all had about 90,000 miles on the clock before I bought them and all have gone on for about the same again, with no problems.

Number of owners can be a good indicator of how a car has been treated too. An older car with high mileage but one owner with full service history has likely been cared for far better than a low mileage newer car with several owners. Sports can usually have high ownership numbers as people buy them impulsively then realise a year down the line they don't use them often. My old Porsche had around 10 owners in as many years. Avoid ex lease cars as people tend to abuse things they don't actually own.

This weekend my car will be 6 months old with ~1425 miles. If I were buying used anything with less than 100k miles should be fine. I'd go with the fewer owners complete maintenance records idea as the best way to choose I think.

When factoring in maintenance and insurance costs, would public transport not be a better choice for you with such crazy low miles?

I am doing the same mileage now I have moved to Edinburgh. I don't use public transport and we have free bus passes. It is just so much more convenient to use the car despite the cost. I have over a quarter-mile walk to a bus stop. Many of the journeys I make into the city would require two buses. My stepdaughter used to visit us on a Sunday and it took 45 minutes to make the two bus trip I could do in 15 with the car. And on most trips, we are going shopping so we have bags to bring home, Either that or pet carriers to the vet.
Owning a car, for me, is a necessity not a luxury.

We don't really have public trans in our community. And though it's that low mileage it's all 3.x-5.x mile round trip, several times a week. I'd probably pay as much or more to Uber than having my car available instantly any time I want.
