It was always a strong talking point here how cars in the US had huge engines and tiny power outputs compared to those in Europe. Even now you can still buy cars there without turbochargers and low power relative to their size. It's quite hard trying to buy a new car here without some kind of power aid, be it turbocharged, supercharged or electrically assisted. Unless you want a 0-60 time of 16 seconds that is...

Had a 2001 Sable with 3l V6 and 2013 Aveo/Sonic with the 1.6L turbo. Without double checking with the googles, the out put and performance of the two were close.

There was just something more engaging about the torque curve of a naturally aspirated engine.

Of course cheaper gas meant not having to worry about the drawback in regular fuel consumption. Then a charged engine can be mismatched to the car. Need to spend more time in the boost, and you might as well as had a larger NA engine

I hear you there. My Porsche and Peugeot have the same power, but the Porsche has 70% more capacity as well as 2 extra cylinders. I like both deliveries although the Peugeot feels quicker thanks to the extra torque and the way it dumps it once boost kicks in, and throws you in the seat. The Porsche you can leave in gear and enjoy the revs longer.

But then I've had well over 50 MPG in the Peugeot. If I had to choose a forever car out the two, it would be the plucky GTi. Small displacement turbo's for the win I'd say.

The Sonic was my DD. The low end torque was nice on the big hills of my commute. The Camry that replaced the Sable could end up gear hunting with its six speed, while the Sonic was happy staying in six.
