It was a while ago, not sure how relevant the article is now. Although diesels are still very popular, not pre scandal levels, but enough for manufacturers to keep producing them.

Not a lot to post about here, not put fuel in the Clio for 4 months due to lock down,
it has over 136,000 miles up now and apart from cam belts, a set of glow plugs and a oil
cooler nothing as gone wrong engine wise.
Don't think there are many cars that are cheaper to run 70 mpg £20 road tax 40,000 on a
set of decent tyres, not worth fitting cheap ones as they usually give half the miles.
Having said that I may be due a change, a friend is thinking of giving up driving and
has a Fiat Panda 06 mod 1300 Diesel with 20,000 on the clock, a swap to that could keep
me going to the end of my driving days.

Yea i had a Clio diesel, it was almost too cheap to run if that makes sense! I can't fathom how people get so many miles from tyres though, I'm on my tenth tyre on the Peugeot in 28000 miles, sure its a performance car and I live in bendy Wales, but still...

I also had a Panda diesel, good little engine, quite noisy though, and a tad sluggish. Could get over 80 MPG in that thing with a careful right foot.

I would be pi$$ed if I didn't get that on one set of tyres. And I live in bendy Scotland.

I replace them in pairs, so five sets I guess? I try and rotate them so I put new ones at the front and put half the half worn ones on the rear. I do enjoy spirited driving from time to time, don't really regard myself as a hard driver though. My boss tends to only get about 8000 a set too, and he's alot older than me, so I can only imagine it's the nature of the roads.

Wow! Even 5 sets in 28k is MAJOR tire wear. Those must be both really interesting and really bad roads.

Guess I'd just got used to excessive tyre wear and assumed it's normal. This is where rallying was born after all, most of the roads resemble a rally stage, although tarmaced. When I was a kid, I'd drive like a tool, I'd easily make a set of tyres illegal in 1500 miles. Another lad I knew pushed even harder, he'd change tyres every two weeks, unsurprisingly he pushed too hard one day, flipped his car and killed his best mate. Guess we all grow up eventually.

My car has Kuhmo Solus tires. I'm not too familiar with them and wouldn't choose them as first choice but you get what you get. Anyway, I expect to get at least 35k out of them. I'll likely go to Michelin eventually.
