Did Toyota just solve the CVT?
The great thing about engineering is how with applied effort solutions are found. A good article came out today which makes sense on solving a CVT's feel. There's really a traditional gear added to the belt system. Usually some car news is too much. This seems kind of like a big step because Toyota sells so much volume across quite a few products globally. It seems very interesting. Other than that it seems CVT's are in the category if you can't beat them, join them - just like the upcoming 2018 Kia Forte. Here's a link if it's ok to post:

When this becomes mainstream in conjuction with a new engine with extremely high thermal efficiency, how can anyone compete with it? Maybe SkyActiv-X?
