Dropping the pan isn't hard. It's just messy. I use one of those large black pans for cement mixing for a drain pan.

Besides the mess, the important thing to remember is not to over tighten the bolts. Tight for them doesn't seem like much, but you could end up damaging the gasket and getting a leak later.
