Question about vtec?

Anybody have links to how the vtec for fuel economy works? I've only dealt with vtec that deals with increased power, not fuel economy.

We recently did a test with a 2003 honda civic hybrid and noticed that in a certain narrow rpm range the power band shifted. Not up though but down. I don't think it was the electric assist stopping because the assist meter was pegged the whole time. It happened in every run in the same area. Manual transmission so there wasn't a shift there(it'd look way uglier if it was anyways).
