Car is running good. The idle dip is back. The flapping noise is also back. Could it be a tire??? Putting snow tires on soon so will see if the noise is evident. Checked all fluids today. Brake fluid is <1% which is okay.

trip to DM - 2nd leg, no wind. Also includes all of the driving in the city. Very hot and had to use the AC. Car stumbles with AC and threw 2 codes: P1128 - lean code, and P1250 - low on fuel code. Both seem like nonsense codes. Once cleared, car ran rough. Turned off the AC, car sat overnight. Next day the car ran fine and no issues at all, however, I have not used the AC since. Need to get the car in the shop to see why the AC loads up the engine so much. Maybe this is related to the idle dip I've had over the years???

Car is running good. Occasional idle dip but rare and not a big deal. After more zip ties, the front flapping is gone as best I can tell. Leaving tonight for DM to see mom for what may be the last time. Car is all checked over and in great shape!

Car is running good. The flapping noise is back since my last note a couple of days ago. Can't figure that one out. Still have the occasional dip in idle after letting up on the gas at low speeds. The axles seem good. Got the front door panels this week and researching how to install them.

Last week I replaced the pass. side CV axle. It fought me every step of the way. Had to cut it off and then remove the two top control arms from the carrier hub to get the new one in. Finally got it done and it seems right on. I checked axle torque on both sides after a day or so of driving. All good. I also re-aligned the driver door strike and tightened a screw in the driver wheel well. I'm guessing something I did worked to remedy the flapping noise I have been getting for the past year! All in all...a success!

The car is running good! Filled with 91 octane, this tank was 85. I replaced the driver side axle and much of the noise is gone. The pass side is slightly loose and I will do it when the weather warms a bit. I got a P0304 code a couple of weeks ago which is a Cyl #4 misfire. It happened after a start without warmup (driving the car) when I was doing the axle, so it may have nothing to do with a misfire and everything to do with fuel loading up the system. However, I replaced all of the coil packs with new Delphi coils and have not had the code since. Further, have not had the "idle dip" that I used to get sometimes shifting to/from 1st - reverse etc. So, to sum up: glad I did the axle, glad I did the coils!

Car is running well, but I drove yesterday and had that "plastic fluttering" sound that I have been having. Dawned on me that it is the axles. Scott's had said my driver side axle was going out and so I wrapped the boot. I ordered two new axles from RA (life warranty) and they should be here Tues.

Car is running good. The irratic idle is 95% solved, but occasionally it will still dip - usually when shifting from R to 1st is when I notice it. Still a creaky control arm in the front, but too faint to diagnose. I added 300ml of CeraTec in June and the car mpg's seem very good! The CeraTec has been awesome in all the vehicles!!!

VW is now running great after finding a bad hose clamp on the intercooler to TB hose. That expalined a lot of issues! I have a flapping noise at 40+mph. Checked the under engine panel and the air deflector to the oil cooler which was loose. Secured both but still have some flapping. Also, faint groaning noises sometimes from what sounds like the F. suspension. Need to get in there to see what's up.

Apr 9 2023

Changed the intercooler hose. Had a bad hose clamp which allowed it to slip off driving. Engine cut in and out. Changed to new hose clamps and car runs well now. I think this has been the cause of the inconsistent idle, and explains why the new TB had no effect. The old hose seems just fine but the upper clamp would loosen after tightening. If idle is good now, car is golden!

Car still has a slight inconsistent dip in idle when letting off the throttle. Otherwise, car is running well. Trying to recalibrate the scangauge for mpg's. Might need a reset.

Oct 12 2022

Car is running well now. Upon return to Scott's, they found that the purge valve was bad and causing the high idle. It is located above the air cleaner box. They left the new TB on, though I very much doubt that I ever needed it. So, spent much more (1k) than I needed to, but at least the car is good now. I changed the pass side outer tie rod and got the alignment (length) right on. A couple of weeks ago I got a P0455 code - major fuel pressure leak or something like that. I put my old fuel cap back on and that turned the code off. So, my new cap from RA was no good. The old one is still good so I'll use it.

Sep 16 2022

I had the car to Scott's repair last Friday. They said: needs new O2 sensor which I did w/ Bosch, new pass side tie rod needed, which I have bought (Delphi - life warranty RA), and needs a new throttle body as the plate was worn which is causing the high idle which is what I took the car in for. That, and the P1136 code (lean fuel bank 1). Took in the car today for the TB and the idle was still high (1100-1200) same as before. Turned off the car to fuel up and it wouldn't restart. Called Scott's and they said tow it in Monday (call first). Tried again and it did start. Will drive tomorrow and try starts to see what problems persist. Could it be that the ECU just needs to re-learn the new TB??? To be continued...

Car went into shop (fcfcr) early on in this tank so miles are not exact. Timing belt, water pump, pullys, crank, cam seals. They broke the front air intake section (resonator), and VW no longer makes this part. Don't really need it. The idle is inconsistent and I'm working on that now. Maybe vac lines, EGR valve, MAF, TB cleaning...not sure. Otherwise car is running well.

Mar 27 2022

Early March had the car in to FCFCR for a full timing belt service. Belt, tensioner pully, water pump and pully, cam and crank seals, etc. Also had them replace the injectors with the Gb reman. from RA. 24 mo. warranty. Car looks good and they agreed the clutch engagement seems high but it is working well.

Car is running good. May try to get it into the shop (FCFCR) soon for some PM. I changed the oil a few weeks ago to 0w40 + Camguard, from the 5w30 which also had some Blue Devil stop leak in it. Seemed kind of thin so changed it out. No reason for the stop leak - just sort of PM for a 180k engine.

Winter trip to DM. 32 mpg going with tail wind. Return trip strong headwind all the way. 80-100 mph going, 80 returning. Car ran good but I hear slight ticking from engine. May try a thicker oil but need to listen with stethoscope first. May take car to Bill to see what he thinks and get the brake fluid changed.

Short tank before trip to DM. Car runs good. I put some Blue Devil oil leak stop in the oil today to see if I can recon seals and a bit of oil weeping. No leaks, but I figure at 181k, it can't hurt. All fluids are good, snow tires are on, ready to go early tomorrow.

Car is running good. I had some old oil on the timing chain cover. Not sure what is going on. Cleaned it up and will watch it. Also had a drip under the car. Tightened up the drain plug as that seemed to be the issue. I don't think the new crush washer I used last fill actually crushed all the way. Torqued to 37 ft. lbs. I'll watch it. I put the small bottle of Lucas in with this fill.

Car is running good. Washed it yesterday and today put on a ceramic coating. Have NOT put the snow tires on this year as I might not need them. Not driving to DM for the holiday because of Covid, so may just be staying home all winter. Much longer clutch travel before engagement than the Porsche so may need to research proper clutch free play. Added a can of 44k in this tank.

Have not had the idle fluctuation lately. Car has been starting well with no clutch switch issue lately. I still hear some creaking from a front ball joint so believe the wear to be increasing. Definitely not too bad yet. Need to get under the car to see if I can see which one is wearing. Car is running very good.

VW is running good...but, sometimes the idle is up and down by ~100-200 rpms. Occasionally will not start with the clutch to the floor. "Neutral safety switch"??? Ball joint may be going out in the front, but too soon to tell which one.
