Repaired at AutoPro. 1 hr, extra.5 hour for stuck axle. $181 labor plus $205 part + 60 hazmat and shop fee. Mechanic said axle I had bought was not correct. They had to order one for an Impreza instead. Could be that transmission was replaced. Or older Outbacks we're actually built on Impreza chassis and only renamed in ~2000-2002. Mine could be a hodgepodge.

Mike and I removed LF wheel and axel but discovered Axel is rust welded to hub. Attempted removal with hammer, torch and WD-40, and impact driver to no avail. Will need a 20 ton press. Reassembled. Added P steering fluid, car no longer whines in a hard turn. Was low, has some bubbles. Definite leak.

Removed rear inner and outer lights. Scraped away all old insulation - mainly a disintegrated rubber gasket - and cleaned assemblies. Installed new LR outer bulbs and RR brake bulb. LR brake is a different bulb - not original connector. Resealed all assemblies with 5/16" weatherstripping plus SVT silicone sealant. $30 for parts, $70 beer and pizza for Mike H.

INSPECTION: Failed inspection initially due taillight leak plus corroded connections. Passed emissions. After considering options, decided to self-repair. Lee Myles quoted >$1,000 for new assemblies and install; I fixed for under $25 and about an hour of work using new sealant from Lowe's. Lee Myles also identified several other needs totaling ~$3,000 (including tires). INSPECTION passed upon re-testing.
