It appears that the clutch pedal spring was indeed needed because without it the clutch is rattling a little bit when stopped and not engaged or when driving at very low speeds. When it rattles, if I push up on the clutch pedal with the back of my foot the rattling goes away. Replaced the spring, but I couldn't find the correct one at Pep-Boys so even though the rattle has diminished it is still there a little.
