The dash now says that Black Volt has used 17 gallons since it was new in June 2011. This 3 gallons should last 'til June 2015. Unfortunately this site refuses to calculate my gas usage since my numbers are too far outside the norm they are filtered as "unreliable". For those that can do simple math, I am averaging over 1200 "MPG". This does not take into account the electricity I use, which is about $1 for 40 miles. So by subtracting 578 miles on gas I have done 20004 miles on electricity, which "cost" me $500. I say "cost" because my electricity comes from my solar array, so I don't actually pay for it. BTW 578 miles on 17 gallons works out to 34MPG. This looks bad until you consider that a huge part of those miles are spent warming up the engine, and very little of it was long trips. The first year saw 4 "Engine Maintenance" sessions and several times when the engine was needed for only 1 mile to complete a trip, with the longest trip being 10 miles. I then did 380 miles in the course of a week to use the full tank of year old gas, the long trips (160 miles) averaged 40MPG. The next 2 years have been similar, with 7-8 Fuel Maintenance burns and fewer miscalculations of the battery range. I now only put 3 gallons in the tank, which lasts the year, with about 2 gallons left at the end of the year that has to be used up before replacing it.

I just noticed that my Android is now reporting 2 gallons left in the tank from the 3 I put in back in August. Dash reports 14.6 gallons burned since new.

I still had 2 gallons left after a year. This time I only had to drive for 2 days to use up the stale gas. After I ran it out of gas it switched over to the fully charged battery and even though it was saying that "Propulsion Power Reduced" and "Engine Not Available" and the NAV was asking if I'd like to see nearby gas stations, it drove just fine. $11.82 for a year's worth of gas!

This 3 gl. represents my anticipated needs for the next year. Sometime in July my Volt will decide that the fuel is about to go stale, and it will start running on gas. When it runs out of gas it will go back to being an EV with a fully charged battery (and no backup).

After 13 months I finally had to use the gas the dealer put in. The Volt is programmed to keep track of the average age of the fuel in the tank, and will normally make you use gas that is 12 months old. I made it to 13 months because the dealer added a few gallons when I took it in for some updates. So after a year I had used gas for about 40 miles out of around 7000 total miles. Now (2-1-13) I am at 407 miles on gas out of 11,000 miles after burning the full tank at 13 months. I only put 3 gallons in, and expect to have that last until it is stale sometime in July '13.

Still no fuel added. Now at 5910.95 miles. Odometer reports 1.6 gallons used. When new it reported 0.6 gallons used in the first mile. It had 5 miles showing then. So I have used 1.0 gallons so far, and gone about 35 miles on that gallon.
